BookBub Review for Authors: Is It Worth It?
This BookBub review takes the author’s side. BookBub is a free deals email for readers and a paid promotion service for writers. A Featured Deal costs a one-time fee set by genre, deal price and region, and it pays off only when royalty, Kindle+ (formerly Kindle Unlimited) pages and later sales beat that fee.
In short
- Featured Deals are free to submit; you pay a one-time fee only if editors pick your book.
- Fees depend on genre, deal price and regions: a US-only $0.99 Thrillers deal was listed at $692 on 28 October 2026.
- BookBub Ads are self-serve CPM or CPC auctions from $1; the Author Profile and New Release Alerts are free.
- At $0.99 on Amazon.com, KDP pays 35%, or $0.35 a copy, unless a Kindle Countdown Deal keeps your 70% rate.
- BookBub fees never appear in KDP or Amazon Ads reports, so you track them yourself.

What BookBub is for authors
For readers, BookBub is free: members say what they like to read and get a daily selection of limited-time ebook deals, according to its sign-up page. For authors, it is a set of marketing tools run from the Partner Dashboard. BookBub’s overview of those tools lists ten. Three are free: the Author Profile, New Release Alerts and Recommendations. For Featured Deals, New Releases for Less and New in Kindle Unlimited, submitting is free and you pay only if your book is picked.
Readers buy at the retailer, so a sale from a BookBub email lands in your KDP reports like any other. That is the difficulty of judging BookBub: it sees the clicks, KDP sees the sales, and neither shows you the other’s numbers.
BookBub options at a glance
Each option is paid differently and judged by a different number, and that number always comes from your KDP and Amazon reports.
| BookBub option | How you pay | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Featured Deal | One-time fee by genre, deal price and region | Royalty and Kindle+ pages across your books, against the weeks before |
| Free Reads | Flat fee by category | Sales and pages of your other books |
| New Releases for Less | Flat fee by category | Launch royalty and pages |
| New in Kindle Unlimited | Flat fee by category | Kindle+ pages after the email |
| BookBub Ads | Auction, CPM or CPC, from $1 | Royalty and pages from the clicks |
| Preorder Alert | $0.02 per subscribed follower | Preorders |
| New Release Alert | Free | Launch royalty |
| Author Profile | Free | Followers, who decide how far alerts reach |
Featured Deals: how submission and selection work
As BookBub’s Featured Deals page describes it, you submit the book and a discount through the Partner Dashboard, editors pick each day’s deals, and if yours is chosen you confirm the date and category, pay, and set the discount. The main requirements:
- Discount: free or at least 50% off, with no better price in the last 30 days or soon after.
- Length: at least 150 pages for novels and collections, 100 for nonfiction and middle grade, 70 for cookbooks, 20 for picture books. Stand-alone novellas and short stories are not featured.
- Retailers: Amazon, Kobo, Barnes and Noble, Google Play or Apple Books, in the US, UK, Canada or Australia.
- Frequency: the same book once every six months at most, the same author once every 30 days.
Meeting the rules doesn’t guarantee a spot. BookBub’s overview of its tools, updated in June 2026, says only 10–20% of eligible deals are selected, because space in the emails is limited. Its older submission advice, from March 2023, put it at about 10–15% of the books submitted for US Featured Deals and says BookBub rarely features new releases. It gets fewer submissions for free and international deals, so those are less competitive. You can resubmit after four weeks.
An ebook in KDP Select must be exclusive to the Kindle Store (KDP Select Enrollment), so its deal runs on Amazon only, and BookBub’s pricing page says such deals reach only part of the category’s subscribers. Start the discount a few days early, as BookBub advises: under its Featured Deal policies, a deal that isn’t live on any retailer by 12am Pacific Time on the day is canceled without a refund.
What a Featured Deal costs
Each fee is a one-time charge set by category, deal price and regions; BookBub says fees reflect recent click ranges and partner demand. Its two regional options are the United States and International, which covers the UK, Canada and Australia (BookBub’s help center). With the pricing page filtered to the United States on 28 October 2026:
| Category | Free | $0.99 | $1–$2 | $2–$3 | $3+ | Clicks, paid deals |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thrillers | $571 | $692 | $1,376 | $1,911 | $2,673 | 2,100–4,200 |
| Contemporary Romance | $504 | $611 | $1,214 | $1,686 | $2,360 | 1,800–3,200 |
| Fantasy | $319 | $387 | $769 | $1,068 | $1,495 | 1,100–2,300 |
The last column is BookBub’s own figure, the 25th to 75th percentile of clicks for recent paid deals, which it says is not a guarantee. Free deals draw far more, 13,300 to 17,600 clicks for US Thrillers. A click is not a sale, though.
The fee buys a guaranteed spot in the day’s email, a blurb by BookBub’s editors and placements in its apps and on its website. It doesn’t buy results: you agree to pay the quoted fee regardless of performance, and a full refund needs at least seven days’ notice. Prices change from time to time, so check your genre before you budget.
BookBub Ads: CPM or CPC bidding
To advertise on BookBub without an editor’s pick, use BookBub Ads, a self-serve platform for any book, discounted or at full price. Its advertising policies allow ebooks, audiobooks and print books in English that you are affiliated with. Ads run in BookBub’s emails and on its website, targeted by the authors and categories readers like, and by retailer and region. You set a budget and a maximum bid:
- CPM: a price per 1,000 impressions. BookBub’s campaign tutorial counts an impression as one opened email or website page.
- CPC: a price per click. You pay only when a reader clicks.
The winning ad pays the second-highest bid, never more than your bid or budget, and the minimum total and daily budget is $1. BookBub’s guide to CPC and CPM suggests CPC for a modest budget and CPM when you need to be seen during a short campaign.
Its bidding guide sets a break-even bid at the share of clicks that buy times what you earn per sale. A $4.99 ebook on KDP’s 70% plan with a 2 MB file earns $3.28 a copy. If one click in five buys, as in BookBub’s example, you break even at about $0.66 a click; at one in ten, $0.33. Those rates are examples, not averages. BookBub’s dashboard tracks impressions and clicks; the sales happen on Amazon.
Free tools and smaller promotions
- Author Profile: free. You can claim it if your ebooks are sold in the US on Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Google or Kobo. BookBub says its tools work better the more followers you have.
- New Release Alerts: free. BookBub emails your followers when you release a new book in the US, if you have an approved profile, at least five followers and the book added to your profile no later than seven days after release.
- Preorder Alerts: $0.02 per subscribed follower, for authors with at least 1,000 followers, up to two per title (Preorder Alert policies).
- New Releases for Less: a weekly email to US readers of new releases priced around $6 or less, at a flat fee by category: $805 for Thrillers on 28 October 2026.
- New in Kindle Unlimited: launched in June 2026 for books in their first 90 days in Amazon’s subscription, now called Kindle+; BookBub still uses the old name. A flat fee by category if the book is picked.
- Free Reads: an email of free, full-length ebooks for a smaller group of BookBub’s most active readers, at a flat rate by category.
Your royalty at the deal price
KDP pays differently at low prices. The Amazon.com rules, from KDP Help:
- The 70% band: the 70% plan covers list prices from $2.99 to $12.99 (eBook List Price Requirements). Below $2.99 an ebook earns 35% of the list price, and $0.99 is the minimum for a file under 3 MB.
- Delivery and price matching: on the 70% plan KDP deducts $0.15 per MB (Digital Book Pricing Page). If Amazon price-matches you below $2.99, you earn 35%; matched to free, nothing.
- Kindle Countdown Deals: in KDP Select, a Countdown Deal keeps 70% “even if the price is below $2.99”, minus delivery, on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk only. The book needs at least 30 days in KDP Select and a list price of $2.99 to $24.99 on Amazon.com. The deal lasts up to seven days, once per 90-day term, with the list price unchanged for 30 days before and 14 after.
- Free days: no royalties during a Free Book Promotion, which allows up to five days per term and can’t share a term with a Countdown Deal.
Set against the US-only Thrillers fees above, that gives:
| Deal price and KDP plan | Royalty per copy | US Thrillers fee | Copies to cover the fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free, Free Book Promotion | $0.00 | $571 | No royalty to cover it |
| $0.99, 35% | $0.35 | $692 | 1,978 |
| $0.99, Countdown Deal at 70% | $0.48 | $692 | 1,442 |
| $1.99, 35% | $0.70 | $1,376 | 1,966 |
| $2.99, 70% | $1.88 | $1,911 | 1,017 |
Figures assume Amazon.com, no VAT and a 2 MB file, worked out as in our KDP royalty calculator; at its $4.99 full price the same book earns $3.28.
BookBub’s click range for US Thrillers deals at $0.99 and up is 2,100 to 4,200. A $0.99 deal at 35% needs roughly half to nearly all of those clicks to buy the deal book just to cover the fee. So judge a deal on everything it brings. BookBub’s Featured Deals page says 70% of authors report higher sales of their other books after a deal, without giving a method.
Kindle+ page reads after a deal
If your ebook is in KDP Select, it is in Kindle+ too, and any BookBub reader who subscribes can borrow it instead of buying. A borrow pays nothing on the day; KDP pays for pages as they are read.
Royalties in Kindle+ come from the KDP Select Global Fund, divided by share of all pages read or listened to (KENP), and a page counts only the first time a subscriber reads it. The fund is announced monthly and KENP is finalized near the 15th of the next month. So:
- Count pages for the deal book and for the rest of the series.
- Keep counting for a few weeks: readers take time to finish a borrowed book.
- Value the pages once the month’s rate is out. Our guide to KENP explains the rate, and the KENP calculator does the sum.
How to tell if a deal or BookBub Ads paid off
You pay BookBub directly, so its fee never appears in your KDP reports or in Amazon Ads. You do the sum yourself, per book and date. BookBub’s own guide to measuring ROI suggests the same shape:
- Baseline. Note daily royalty, Kindle+ pages and sales rank for a couple of weeks before the promotion.
- Cost. Record the fee or the BookBub Ads spend against the book and the dates.
- Income. Add the royalty for the deal book and your other books during the deal and for at least two weeks after, plus pages at the month’s rate.
- Result. Subtract the baseline, the cost and any Amazon Ads spend on the same books, or BookBub gets the credit for sales your Amazon ads bought.
BookBub Ads can be measured more closely, because you choose the link. Amazon Attribution, open to eligible KDP accounts in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy since September 2022, tags the link and reports the Amazon sales, pages read and royalty it led to. BookBub’s guide says to check each platform’s terms first. A Featured Deal goes out on one day, so compare daily figures before and after; our guide to KDP reports shows where to find them.
Is BookBub worth it?
BookBub is one channel among several (our guide to marketing a self-published book covers the others), and most of the answer can be checked before you pay:
- Series or standalone. A deal on book one can be paid for by the books after it; a standalone has only its own royalty and pages.
- KDP Select or wide. In KDP Select, a Countdown Deal keeps 70% and Kindle+ pages add to the return, but the deal reaches fewer subscribers. Wide, it can run on every retailer BookBub supports, at 35% on Amazon below $2.99.
- Cost per click. Divide the fee by the low end of the click range: $692 for US Thrillers over 2,100 clicks is about $0.33 a click. Compare it with your cost per click on Amazon Ads, using our guide to Amazon PPC for authors.
- The free tools. If you are eligible, the Author Profile and New Release Alerts cost nothing.
Either way, the sum needs your royalty and Amazon ad spend for the same books and days. SelfPub Go puts them side by side: royalty analytics reads the KDP report you already download, and the ads module connects to Amazon Ads through Amazon’s official sign-in. The BookBub fee is the one number you add yourself.

SelfPub Go is a desktop app for macOS and Windows that connects to Amazon Ads through Amazon’s official sign-in and puts your ads next to your KDP royalties.

Frequently asked questions
Is BookBub legit?
Yes. BookBub is a free deals email that readers sign up for, and it sells promotions to authors and publishers through its Partner Dashboard. It publishes its Featured Deal fees and requirements, and its policies say plainly that you pay the quoted fee regardless of performance.
Is BookBub worth it for authors?
It depends on the book. A Featured Deal is worth it when the royalty from discounted sales, Kindle+ pages and sales of your other books add up to more than the fee. A deal on the first book of a series can also be paid for by the books after it. The Author Profile and New Release Alerts are free, so they are worth setting up if you are eligible.
How much does a BookBub Featured Deal cost?
BookBub charges a one-time fee set by the book's category, deal price and regions. On 28 October 2026 its pricing page listed a US-only Thrillers deal at $692 for a $0.99 price and $2,673 at $3 and up, and a US-only Fantasy deal at $387 and $1,495. Submitting is free; you pay only after you confirm a selected deal.
How hard is it to get a BookBub Featured Deal?
BookBub's overview of its marketing tools, updated in June 2026, says only 10–20% of eligible deals are selected, because space in its emails is limited. Its older submission advice, from March 2023, put it at about 10–15% of the books submitted for US Featured Deals, and adds that BookBub gets fewer submissions for free and international deals, rarely features new releases, and lets you resubmit a declined book after four weeks.
How do BookBub Ads work?
BookBub Ads is a self-serve auction. You set a budget and a maximum bid, either per 1,000 impressions (CPM) or per click (CPC), and the winning ad pays the second-highest bid. An impression is one opened email or one page view on BookBub's website, and the minimum total and daily budget is $1.
What royalty do I earn on a $0.99 BookBub deal?
On Amazon.com, $0.99 is below KDP's 70% band of $2.99 to $12.99, so the ebook earns 35%: $0.35 a copy. If the book is in KDP Select and you run a Kindle Countdown Deal, KDP keeps the 70% rate on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, minus delivery costs: $0.48 a copy for a 2 MB file.
Do BookBub costs show up in my KDP or Amazon Ads reports?
No. You pay BookBub directly, so the fee isn't in your KDP reports or in Amazon Ads. Record it per book and date, then subtract it from the extra royalty and Kindle+ earnings the promotion brought compared with the weeks before.
